7 Effective Ways to Increase Your Email Subscribers

Your email marketing is only as effective as the strength of your email list. While having a big list can certainly help you enjoy more success with your email marketing, when it comes to finding subscribers, quality is just as important as quantity.

If you are serious about your email marketing and want to take it to the next level, the focus should be on building a list of email subscribers who are engaged with your brand and interested in what you have to offer rather than getting as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time.

While building an email list takes time and there are no shortcuts, there are a few strategies that can help you increase your number of quality subscribers as quickly as possible. Here are seven of our favourites.

1. Popups

If you spend any time at all on the internet you have almost certainly come across those irritating little (or big) boxes that pop up when you are browsing a site, asking you to sign up for something (usually an email list). While everyone agrees they are annoying, they are also proven to increase sign up rates, often by a lot.

2. Create an incentive

Another tried and tested way to encourage people to subscribe to your list is to offer them something free in exchange for their email address. Incentives can be informational like an e-book, checklist, tip sheet, infographic or a free course, or they can be more tangible like a discount voucher or free trial of a product or service. Whatever you choose to offer, make sure it’s valuable and appealing to your target audience.

3. Run a contest

If you want to get a bit more creative, why not run a contest where people can go into a draw to win a prize when they submit their email addresses? This can be a great way to give your list numbers a boost in a short space of time.

4. Add a newsletter signup option to the comment section on your blog

This is something that many people don’t think about. If your readers are engaged enough to comment on your blog, chances are they will be interested in subscribing to your list. It’s usually very straightforward to add a checkbox at the same time they make their comment (when they are already providing their email address) allowing them to instantly subscribe.

5. Add email signups to your social pages including Facebook and Twitter

Don’t just limit your options to website visitors. Make sure that your social media followers can also subscribe to your email list from your Facebook, Twitter and Google + pages. The more opportunities you have to capture email addresses, the more you are likely to get.

6. For ecommerce businesses, add a signup option to your checkout page

A checkbox for customers who are purchasing from you can be a very simple and effective way to increase your subscribers. If someone has already purchased from you its highly likely they will want to go on your email list, and as they are already providing their details, it’s no extra effort for them to sign up.

7. Test as much as you can

A/B testing shows you what is working and what isn’t when you are trying to increase your subscribers. From different sign up box placements, styles, wording and just about everything else, you might be surprised at the difference a few small changes make to your overall sign up rates.
